Rankin takes out Queensland Medal

Brett Rankin (Pacific) has signalled he is back with a resounding 7 shot victory in the 2008 Queensland Medal which finished today at the Nudgee Golf Club. Rankin who admits himself has struggled over the last 6 months, knew he was close to finding his touch after some good performances lately, however was extremely pleased with his performance this week, taking out the Medal and his biggest victory to date.

Rankin was undoubtably the best golfer this week, and went for an amazing 60 hole stretch without a bogey. He bogeyed the first hole on Wednesday (round 1) and then it was only during his final round this afternoon on the 8th hole did he record his 2nd bogey of the week. It was a good sign that he is back to his best and he is looking forward to the coming weeks.

Finishing in second place was Ray Beaufils (Surfers Paradise) who like Rankin has struggled lately and feels that he is getting back to the form he showed during the last couple of years. Beaufils finished at 276 (-8) with closing rounds of 68 (-3) and 70 (-1) today.

Interestingly Rankin and Beaufils have recently been dropped from the Golf Australia National Squad. Both are obviously keen to play their way back in to the squad and good performances over the next 2 weeks, in the Queensland Amateur Championship and the Keperra Bowl (National Selection Event) won't do their chances any harm.


Aaron Wilkin at just 15 years of age finished 3rd

In third place was up and coming star Aaron Wilkin (Wynnum) who continues to impress at just 15 years of age. Wilkin is part of Golf Queensland's Junior Development Team, and is playing great golf finishing at 277 (-7) for the Championship.

Another young star 16 year old Taylor Cooper finished with the tournament low round of 65 (-6) this afternoon. Cooper is also part of the Golf Queensland Development Team which will take on New South Wales next Monday prior to the Keperra Bowl.

The leading 16 players will now contest the Queensland Amateur Championship at Bribie Island Golf Club commencing on Tuesday. All matches are over 36 holes, and the format will certainly find the player that has control of his game, his mind and his fitness. The Amateur Championship dates back to 1900 and is one of the country's oldest and most prestigious Championships. The 16 players teeing up on Tuesday morning will be looking forward to the opportunity of getting their name etched on the trophy alongside some of Queensland and Australia's best.
