Consoli wins Queensland Amateur
Championship
Jared Consoli, the 6th qualifier in last week's
Queensland Medal has won the 2008 Queensland Men's Amateur
Championship this afternoon at Bribie Island Golf Club in
what is easily the biggest achievement of his golfing career.
The 20 year old from Pacific Golf Club played outstanding
golf today to defeat fellow clubmate Do Eun (Philip) An
3&2.

2008 Queensland Amateur Champion- Jared Consoli
It has been a long two weeks for both Consoli
and An, with 72 holes over 3 days last week at Nudgee, and
then 36 hole matches at Bribie over the last 4 days. Along
the way this week, Consoli took on and defeated Adam Boyer
(Indooroopilly) 1up, State Team member Matthew McBain (Royal
Queensland) 4&3, and Peter Hall (Indooroopilly) 3&2.
Consoli played great golf today finishing
the morning 18 holes in 70 (-2) strokes, on the demanding
Bribie Island layout which penalises those that stray from
the tee. He went to the lunch break with a 2up lead.

Jared Consoli
Consoli continued his good form after the
break and after 25 holes had stretched the lead to 4up.
It was an up and down battle from there in with both players
winning and losing a few holes. Consoli managed to get to
5up through 29 holes and then a couple of birdies from An
reduced the lead to 3 again. Closing pars by both players
saw the match finish on the 34th hole with Consoli winning
3&2.
After reflecting on his round Consoli commented
on how pleased he was with the control of his mental game
throughout the week. He felt that this was the difference
and was really pleased of the way he handled himself on
a stage that was bigger than he had been before.
An's golf from tee to green was probably superior
to Consoli's, however the short game was the difference
with Consoli managing to make a number of critical puts
at various times throughout the day. The quality of golf
on display was high and through the 34 holes today Consoli
was 4 under par.

16 year old Do Eun An was impressive
Enough can't be said of An however, who at
just 16 years of age has a promising career ahead. In fact
if he was to win today he would have become the youngest
ever winner of the Championship. Jason Day was one month
older when he won in 2004.
His efforts were this week were beyond his
16 years. He defeated another young star Taylor Cooper on
Tuesday, then the number one qualifier Brett Rankin (Pacific)
on day 2 and another Pacific member, in form Gavin Fairfax
yesterday.
The Bribie Island Golf Club was again presented
in immaculate condition and Consoli rated the course as
the best in Queensland during his speech at the Presentation
ceremony. The Course Superintendent Shaun O'Leary and his
staff have again done the club proud.
Consoli will now have his name engraved on
the trophy that has a proud history dating back to 1900
and features names such as the great Norman Von Nida (1932)
and more recently Jason Day (2004 and 2006). It is a great
achievement for the young man, who will be on cloud nine
for a few weeks. It will be interesting to watch how the
win this week impacts on his development. The well mannered
young man will be one to watch during next week's Keperra
Bow and the coming months.
